Prof. Pascha hat sich in einer neuen Veröffentlichung mit der Entwicklung der ASEAN-Gemeinschaft in Südostasien befasst. Der Beitrag verortet die Entwicklung der ASEAN im Spannungsfeld zwischen hohen, auch übertrieben hohen Erwartungen in Bezug auf die Gestaltbarkeit von Integrationsräumen einerseits und einem mangelnden Engagement bei der Einrichtung funktionstüchtiger Regionalintegration andererseits. Er verfolgt die These, dass diese Dualität angesichts schwieriger Rahmenbedingungen fast unvermeidbar ist und die ASEAN ihre politischen und wirtschaftlichen Ziele nur ohne ein enges und verbindliches Rahmengerüst verfolgen kann, obwohl selbstformulierte Visionen anderes suggerieren wollen. Insoweit könnte die ASEAN sogar als Vorreiter einer neuen Welle "asiatisch geprägter" Kooperationsmechanismen interpretiert werden. Der Beitrag entstand im Rahmen einer Tagung des Forschungsseminars Radein, bei dem sich einmal jährlich ordnungs- und institutionenökonomisch interessierte Wissenschaftler in den Südtiroler Bergen zusammenfinden.

On June 16, 2020 (Tue), the Chair of East Asian Economics Studies/Japan and Korea will conduct the exam review for exams taken in Winter semester 2019/20. Due to the special circumstances of the COVID 19-pandemic, the review will take place as Skype appointment - with a split screen for an insight into the respective exam - between the lecturer of the course and the student. Interested students register by June 10, 2020 (Wed) in order to schedule the exact time on June 16, 2020.

In the new paper, initiatives like China´s Belt and Road Initiative, Japan´s Partnership for Quality Infrastructure and the EU´s “Connecting Europe and Asia: Building blocks for an EU Strategy” are interpreted as the creation and development of a new market, whose characteristics like the complexity of its idiosyncratic product(s), its properties as an international public good and its oligopolistic supply structure create interesting and sometimes underrated insights. Interpretating the interaction of initiatives as an evolving oligopolistic structure, a chaotic competitive process has so far been avoided, and the contest actually has the potential to evolve towards superior solutions, raising the quality of such initiatives. ]]> annemarie.tappert@uni-due.de Wed, 27 May 2020 13:09:59 +0200 Paper by Prof. Werner Pascha on the Dynamics of Chinese and Japanese Infrastructure Connectivity Initiatives and Europe’s Responses https://www.jpnkor.msm.uni-due.de//aktuelles/einzelansicht/paper-by-prof-werner-pascha-on-the-dynamics-of-chinese-and-japanese-infrastructure-connectivity-initiatives-and-europes-responses-15631/?no_cache=1 In the Working Paper Series of the Asian Development Bank Institute Prof. Pascha argues that East Asia is setting the pace for the recent trend in regional and interregional integration, which is associated with multilateral infrastructure connectivity initiatives, like the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) of the People’s Republic of China and Japan’s “Partnership for Quality Infrastructure” (PQI). While the EU was one of the early movers, with the establishment of the European Investment Bank in 1958 for instance, its mechanisms have so far not become pillars of a coherent and forceful political–economic strategy of the EU. The current European situation is rather one of reacting to a dynamic that other countries elsewhere have created. The paper offers conclusions and policy recommendations for developing a more forceful European strategy.

we live in very unusual times. Like you as students, we as teachers have never experienced anything like this before. Nevertheless, I would like to assure you that we at the Chair of East Asian Studies/Japan and Korea will do our best to deal with this situation as flexibly and effectively as possible so that you can earn your credits in the summer semester. 

Let me give you an overview of how we plan to deal with this unprecedented challenge while remaining flexible as new developments emerge. 

You know that the semester begins on April 20. At least in the first few weeks of the semester, it will not be possible to attend regular lectures and seminars. We will provide course outlines, PP presentations, required reading and last but not least accompanying audio or video files through Moodle, in some cases possibly using videoconferencing software. There will be features for communication and Q&A.

Another complication is that, as you know, I will be retiring by the end of the summer semester, i.e. by September 30, 2020. The rules for the final exams and for registering for theses remain unchanged. We will see in due course how we will deal with the written and oral examinations.

Despite the difficult circumstances, we are working hard to master the situation successfully in order to make the coming summer semester fruitful and successful.
