Curriculum Vitae:

  • Born in Kettwig, Germany, 6 August 1957
  • 1976 – 1981  Studying economics at the University of Freiburg, Germany, and at the London School of Economics; Diplom degree (corresponding M.A.) in Freiburg
  • 1982 – 1985  Doctoral studies in economics in Freiburg and at Nagoya University, Japan; 1985 Doctoral thesis on structural change in the declining Japanese textile industry (summa cum laude; Freiburg)
  • 1984 – 1991  Research Assistant in the Institute for Development Policy, from 1986 as Senior Fellow in the Faculty of Economics, Freiburg University;
  • 1986-87 on leave to Nagoya University, Japan, and to the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies, Singapore
  • 1991  Advanced doctoral degree (Habilitation) in economics (Freiburg); thesis on outward-oriented industrialization in Pacific Asia
  • Since 1992  Full Professor of East Asian Economic Studies at Duisburg University (now: Duisburg-Essen University, Germany)
